Northwestern University First to Deploy VidyoConferencing to its Academic Community for “Telepresence–Quality” Video Communications Over the Internet

HACKENSACK, NJ (February 17, 2010) – Vidyo® Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today introduced the first affordable HD video conferencing and collaboration system to enable all members of a University community to communicate and collaborate quickly and naturally in HD quality via the Internet on desktop and room system video communications. The VidyoCampus™ program simplifies buying a VidyoConferencing™ system for large scale university deployments by offering a single site license that covers all components of Vidyo´s conferencing systems at a price that is affordable to any school´s budget. Northwestern University is currently using the Vidyo system at its Feinberg School of Medicine and will soon be deploying to its broader community of researchers, instructors, students and staff.

“Vidyo´s solution will let us offer our entire academic community a high–quality, cost–effective platform on which to communicate and collaborate,” said Mort Rahimi, Northwestern University´s Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Technology Officer. “The VidyoCampus systems allow us to integrate the best–of–class desktop video services from Vidyo with our significant investment in room–based H.323 systems in our classrooms and conference rooms. Facilitating real–time, face–to–face collaboration is essential to the success of our research teams, and it also opens new opportunities for our University to provide education to a global community.”

“The Vidyo solution provides more than a reliable and easy to use desktop video–conferencing environment,” according to Nathaniel Soper, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. “Vidyo extends our ability to broadcast training from our most innovative campus operating rooms throughout the medical center and to physicians desktops literally anywhere in the world. In addition, we have begun integrating information from select Operating Room equipment into our Vidyo broadcasts. In the future, this may allow us to involve and collaborate with other physicians unable to be physically present. Innovation like this, that brings better information to everyone involved, helps us provide better care today and improved surgical process for tomorrow. We look forward to integrating Vidyo into our clinical and educational environment as another important tool for us.”

“For universities who thought telepresence–quality video conferencing was beyond affordable reach, Vidyo now makes it possible. It is the only solution to satisfy all of the key conditions and capabilities that need to be considered before making an investment,” said Rob Hughes, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales. “Cost per user, scalability, accessibility, and the quality of the video, especially in terms of latency and multipoint performance, are the primary reasons that universities, like Northwestern, are now looking to Vidyo for a better solution than what was previously available.”

The VidyoCampus Program

The VidyoCampus program makes it easy and affordable for universities to deploy VidyoConferencing to every desktop in the University´s collaboration community by offering a single site license that represents a bundle of: VidyoRouter™ appliances, VidyoRouter multipoint conferencing port software licenses, VidyoPortal™ seat software licenses, and VidyoDesktop™ client downloads.

The solution consists of:

  • VidyoDesktop, a software client for Mac or Windows (with Linux coming soon)
  • VidyoPortal, an Intel x86–based appliance that provides web–based management services
  • VidyoRouter, an Intel x86–based appliance that provides the software–based multi–point ports, call processing and routing functionality.
  • Also available are the optional VidyoRoom™ systems as well as the VidyoGateway™ which enables connectivity between the VidyoConferencing system and legacy H.323 or SIP endpoints. VidyoCampus site licenses are priced to be affordable in any school´s budget and are tiered by the total number of students enrolled at the university.

The Vidyo Difference: Next Generation Video Conferencing

One remarkable aspect to Vidyo´s solution is its ability to deliver high definition (HD) multi–point performance over the public Internet from standard Macs and PCs, utilizing software–enabled ports on its VidyoRouter. Vidyo´s unique architecture, built from the ground up, is the first in a new generation of software solutions that leverages the H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC) video compression standard. This allows VidyoConferencing to easily scale, servicing thousands of collaborators for a fraction of the cost of competitors solutions. Legacy MCU–based solutions do not scale well since they are hardware limited, require costly QoS enhanced lines to achieve mediocre performance, and are heavily laden with up front equipment expense.

Vidyo´s patented VidyoRouter architecture delivers the only available H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC) solution that eliminates an MCU while delivering the industry´s best error resilience and lowest latency videoconferencing solution over the Internet and wireless networks. VidyoTechnology™ is used by Hitachi, Teliris, ShoreTel and other major organizations and enterprises.
